Village Charitable Trusts

There are two charitable trusts in the parish of Barford St John and St Michael. Each of the trusts is managed by committee of 8 trustees plus the vicar of the parish. The trustees are confirmed by the Parish Council.

Hall and Fernhill Trust

 

The charity was set up in the 19th century as a coal fund with needy people being given one or two sacks of coal each year, then over the years grants were given for items such as electric blankets or to pay for a taxi to visit sick relations.

 

The current object of the trust stated in the charity’s governing document is as follows:

 

The object of the Charity shall be to provide support, where needed, either generally or individually, to persons resident in the Parish of Barford St. John and St. Michael.

 

Thankfully the levels of poverty experienced when the charity was set up may no longer affect many of us but the Trustees are keen to see the funds being used wisely. Bakehouse or Shepherds Charitable Trust

 

The income of the trust is used:

 

(a) in apprenticing beneficiaries to some useful trade or occupation;

 

(b)   in assisting beneficiaries who are preparing for, entering upon, or engaged in, any profession, trade or calling by providing them with outfits, or by the payment of fees, travelling or maintenance expenses, or by such other means for their advancement in life or to enable them to earn their own living as the Trustees think fit;

 

(c)   in awarding to beneficiaries scholarships, grants or maintenance allowances tenable at any secondary school, college of education, university or other institution of further (including professional and technical) education approved by the Trustees;

 

(d)   in otherwise promoting the education (including social and physical training) of beneficiaries.

 

We consider applications from people (who have been resident in the parish for a minimum of three years) in year 12 upwards in any sort of education. This might be a student at college or an adult who is retraining due to a change in circumstance.

 

Approximately 10 individuals receive grants each year. Typically the grant is spent on books, computer equipment, course fees, etc..
